Lou Hill has worked in free clinics
since 1997, first with Morganton’s Good Samaritan Clinic, and, since 2003, as Executive
Director of
Helping Hands Clinic
. Since she assumed leadership of Helping Hands, the number of staff, operating hours, and the organization’s budget have each quadrupled, responding to an increased demand for services. Hill is a graduate of
Guilford
College
, where she earned a Bachelor
of Arts in English and French, and the
University
of
North Carolina
at
Chapel Hill
, where she earned an Master
of Public Health in Health Policy and Administration. She holds a certificate in Non-Profit
Management
from
Duke
University
and is certified as an Administrator of Volunteers in North Carolina (CAVNC) by the NC Association of Volunteer Administration. Hill lives in Morganton with her husband Gus, daughter Gracie,
three dogs and two cats. |
Dr. Andy Metzger, Medical Director
and Staff Physician

Dr. Metzger graduated from medical school at the University of Maryland in Baltimore in 1972 and received his training in internal medicine and nephrology there. He started practicing in 1977 in Lenoir at Thompson Medical Specialists, where he was the first physician in the Unifour to use dialysis units. He retired from active practice in October of 2004. Dr. Metzger has four children, and currently lives in Blowing Rock with his wife, Nancy, a registered nurse. They have seven grandchildren and spend their free time camping, hiking and RV-ing. His goal for Helping Hands Clinic is to develop a system
of care that allows clients to receive the same quality of medical care as those who have insurance. |
Connie Vermillion, Clinic Coordinator

Connie Vermillion has been employed at Helping Hands Clinic since February 1999. She is a graduate of Lenoir High School and has lived in Caldwell County since 1950, except for three years in Washington DC. Connie is married to Marty Vermillion
and has three sons, two of whom live in Caldwell County and one who lives in Flagstaff, Arizona. They have two grandsons. |
Debra Philyaw, Volunteer
Coordinator

Debra Philyaw is the director for the clinic's chronic disease management program, the Caldwell Health Access Program (CHAP). Prior to joining the staff, Debra had been a volunteer for Helping Hands Clinic for six years. She has eleven years of eligibility and social work experience and has worked for both Caldwell Memorial Hospital and Catawba Valley Medical Center in the past. Debra is a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hudson and enjoys reading and playing tennis. She is married to Michael Philyaw, Director of College Stores at CCC&TI, has one 16-year-old son, Brad Suddreth, and has one dog, a Westie
named Abby. |
Shelia Helton, CPhT, Pharmacy

Shelia Helton is a lifelong resident of Caldwell County. She has been a pharmacy technician for ten years and has worked at Helping Hands Clinic for 5 years (on two separate occasions). Shelia has a daughter, Deandre,
a granddaughter, Abbi, six dogs, and a cat. |
Pat Cornett, CPhT, Pharmacy
Technician

Pat Cornett has been employed at Helping Hands Clinic since July 2002, but she has been a pharmacy technician since 1989. She is a
Caldwell
County native and a graduate of Hibriten High School. She is married to Joe Cornett, has two daughters and three granddaughters. |
Samantha Moody, Pharmacy
Assistant

Samantha joined the
clinic in August 2006 to help manage patient referrals and recruit clinical
volunteers. She joined the clinic with five years experience as a Medical Office Assistant.
Recently, Samantha has gone back to school to pursue a degree in nursing and is
working part-time at the clinic as a Pharmacy Assistant. Originally from Abingdon, Virginia Samantha is a member of New Grace Church in Morganton and sings in the Sisters of Grace gospel group. She lives in Lenoir with her family. |
Rodgers White, RPh, Pharmacy Director
